Foreign Language

Intent

At Reed First School children from Year One onwards are taught to develop an interest in learning other languages in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating. We strive to stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about language. We aim to develop their awareness of cultural differences in other countries through curriculum enrichment opportunities. As a school, we celebrate the languages spoken by some of our pupils by sharing simple words and phrases in Hungarian, Russian and Polish. We celebrate our diversity through European week where we ask our families to share language, tradition, food and culture from their country of birth.

Children in our infant and Junior classes enjoy weekly French lessons. We aim to embed the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing necessary to enable children to use and apply their French learning in a variety of contexts and lay the foundations for future language rich learning.

Using Language Angels as a basis for our planning, the children have opportunities to begin to learn a second (and in some cases a third!) language by listening, speaking, reading, writing and investigating the grammar of the language while finding out about another country.
